Is Ivory Coast safe? An honest answer.

Almost everyone asks this, and most of the answers online are either marketing or alarm. We live and work in Abidjan and drive these roads ourselves, so here is the version we would give a friend: the coast and the tourist towns are fine, the traffic is the real risk, and the north follows different rules from the south. Read the current travel advice from your own foreign ministry as well — that is the authoritative source. This page is our experience.

The short answer
Yes, for the south and the tourist areas. In Grand-Bassam and along the coast you walk the streets normally, shop in markets and take shared taxis into Abidjan. That does not hold for the northern border regions with Mali and Burkina Faso, where governments advise against travel. But the largest statistical risk on your trip is neither crime nor politics — it is the road.
